New site changes and updates
Hi all
I've made some changes to the site, as returning visitors can tell. There have been a few technical challenges overcome, a number yet unresolved, but at least the major parts of the site are in place.
Here are some of the changes, some are cosmetic, others under the hood:
- Changed from two column layout to three columns. This allows more content to be displayed without requiring too much vertical scrolling of the webpage.
- Added the photo gallery and posted some photos. This module is a little tricky to install, embed and integrate with the site. More work needs to be done here. However, it is (mostly) working and members can now create their own photo albums to upload and share photos of Sapta related events.
- Changed photos in the header to scenes of St Andrew's. A new photo is displayed each time the page is loaded or refreshed. More will be added later as become available.
- Added the Event module. ExCo members can now post news of upcoming Sapta events. The Calendar on the bottom right is part of the module and serves to highlight the dates on which events occur. Yes, I know it sticks out a bit on the right as its wider than the column. Will need to fix that soon.
- Implemented the need for new registrations to be approved by Site Admin as I've noticed a few spurious registrations coming in. I've had to delete at least three accounts that are obviously not by Sapta members.
These are most of the changes I can think of right now; at least the most important ones to the site's operations. There are a lot of other things I would like to implement on the site - some I will do as soon as possible, while others are beyond me technically and for which we will probably outsource to a professional programmer.
I'd love to hear your feedback on the above changes - what you like so far, what you dislike, and what else you'd like to see, and if you are encountering any bugs or difficulties around the site.
I hope that the participation level can go up and more parents chime in.

Since turning on the requirement for admin approval for new member registrations onsite, I've had to delete at least 12 applications by spammers advertising Viagra and other stuff. It's obvious our site has been 'discovered' by these undesirable elements and we should expect to be bombarded by more of the same in the weeks and months to come.
Since most of these attacks are automated, I will be installing a new measure to counter them - the Captcha.
A CAPTCHA is a challenge-response test most often placed within web forms to determine whether the user is human. The purpose of a CAPTCHA is to block form submissions from spambots.
The most commonly-used Captchas that you might have encountered on other sites is a series of letters or numbers or both that you have to manually type into a field. These are randomly generated and so no spam 'robot' can do these automatically; only human beings.
Hopefully, this new measure will cut down the admin work needed to filter out the spurious from the genuine.
As only registered members are allowed to post comments, we do not need to install Captchas on forms for posting of comments (for now!).
