A fund-raising event at the Tanah Merah Country Club on 29th October, 2009 in aid of,
SAPTA’s Tuition Program for Sports Boys

SAPTA (St. Andrew’s Parent-Teacher Association) in association with SAA (St. Andrew’s Alumni) organized the 2nd Saints Golf Challenge on Thursday, October 29th at the Tanah Merah Country Club. This fund-raising event was organized in aid of SAPTA’s Tuition Program for Sports Boys, a program started in 2008 to serve as a platform to enhance the academic proficiency of school athletes in the Junior and Secondary School. It provides our sports boys with supplementary coaching to excel in the academic arena despite committing a significant portion of their time to training and competing.

The golf event which was held at the Tampines Course started at 11.00am. The 43 golfers who participated were a mixture of old boys, parents and those who had no association with the school but were game to play a round of golf for a good cause. The golfers who started to tee-off at 12.30pm after lunch enjoyed the 18-hole course under exceptionally lovely weather. No one got a hole-in-one but our top 3 prizes went to Tay Swee Sze (1st), Ong Chuon Ren (2nd) and Rayson Hazra (3rd). Novelty prizes were also given for nearest pin, nearest line and longest drive.

The golf event was followed by a lovely wine appreciation dinner at the Garden Banquet Room. Our guest-of-honour was Mr Yee Teck Peng. Among the guests present was Mrs Wai Yin Pryke (Principal, SAJS). Diners sampled 5 different wines with their dinner, including a Cabernet Sauvignon wine-tasting in which 3 wines from Israel, Chile and Australia were featured. The highlight of the dinner was of course the Wine Auction which additionally raised $7,000 for the tuition fund.

It was a wonderful event with a fitting finale when Mr Yee was invited on stage to lead the singing of the St. Andrew’s School song. Together with a group of old boys which included Jemmy Ong (SAPTA Chairman), Leroy McCully (Vice Chairman) and Thomas Tham (Vice-Principal, SAJS) the evening ended on a boisterous note with a baritone chorus of Up & On filling the air.

SAPTA would like to thank our sponsors, Eversheds (Singapore), Splash Productions Pte Ltd, Old Chang Kee Ltd, Infinite Supply Pte Ltd, Canon Singapore Pte Ltd, E3 Discovery LLP and the Tanah Merah Country Club. We would also like to thank our secondary school boys from the Photographic and Infocomm Club for covering the event and creating the photos and visuals.

Last but not least, we would like to say a big thank you to the St. Andrew’s Alumni, all our donors and everyone who participated in our golf and dinner event this year. Your generosity will go a long way in supporting our Tuition Program for Sports Boys.
